Why 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows' is awesome

Cowabunga!

Like I needed to tell you to forget the forgettable first movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is the most faithful cinematic adaptation of the hit 90s cartoons. With the addition of classic characters Casey Jones, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady, the film triggers nostalgia among those who grew up watching the movie.

It may perhaps be a kiddifed version of the certain strange mutant teens from Westchester, tackling themes of racism, assimilation and acceptance. Yes, fellow reviewers may complain about its lack of depth-the story is not something that would win an Oscar - but remember this is not X-Men. What made the hit cartoon show tick was its light, fun-filled adventure story starring pizza-loving reptiles with sais, sticks and samurais.

Speaking of pizza, I was thrilled to learn that the movie paid homage to TMNT comics creator Kevin Eastman by naming the pizza delivery guy, Kevin. Eastman still co-writes the comic book and has been the inspiration for the pacifist teacher of Morgan from The Walking Dead TV show.

There's a lot of homages from Casey's car plate, referencing Mirage Comics and the year TMNT was published, to the ooze which created the mutated turtles in the comics and TV show.

I also find Stephen Amell's Casey Jones refreshing, playing a much lighter vigilante than Arrow. If there is material for it, I would like to see a Casey Jones spin-off with his trademark hockey mask and roller blades.

While Megan Fox's April O'Neil may be unbelievable to take on a ninja girl, her character is entertaining to watch as she snoops around and disguises herself as a school girl. This reporter needs to be suspended though for violating ethics in investigative journalism.

All in all, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is a movie that Batang 90s will surely enjoy.
